Okay, as promised… here is Part 4 of your Blogging For Cash training series. In this lesson we’ll be covering how to use Google Adsense to monetize your blog.
First, you have to check the WordPress theme you are using for your blog to make sure it is designed to handle Google Adsense Ads. Adsense is just one of the many ways to start earning revenue from your blog. The downfall of Adsense is that it takes a lot of visitors to generate a substantial amount of income. Don’t get me wrong, just remember it’s just one method that you can use to generate income on your blog.
The biggest problem with Adsense is that it takes a lot of clicks.
First, you will need a Google Adsense account. But before you go running off to get a Google Adsense account you are going to need to have posted at least eight or so posts on your blog. In other words, you need to have content on your blog. After you have some content, then go to http://adsense.google.com and get your account.
Once you’ve completed the registration it can take up to 24 hours or more to get an approval back. The Google staff will check your website to make sure it meets their guidelines and that it has content. You may want to take a look first at their adsense policy to make sure your site conforms with their policies.
Once your website has been approved login to you Google Adsense account. What you are going to want to do now is customize the ad colors and style of your ads that will match up with your site. Make the colors blend in to the colors on your site so they don’t look like blatant advertising. That way the ads will look like part of your site.
To add Google Adsense to your blog can be quite time consuming if you have to go in and edit the html code in the template of your Wordpress theme. This is where you want to use a plugin for adding Adsense. Go to http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/adsense-manager/.
This little gem will save you a ton of time and work!
You simply download it to your computer in your WordPress folder. Then you will need to upload it to the wp-content/plugins directory on your hosting account. Then login to your blog as an administrator and go to the plugins setup and follow the directions to activate it. You can determine where the ads appear on your blog pages with the widgets.
To use the Adsense Manager, click on Manage and then on Ads. Then you will need to click on Options so you can enter your Adsense Account ID. Without this, the ads will not appear properly on your site. This ID number is your personal ID assigned to you by Google. You will find it at the bottom of your Adsense Accounts Settings page in the Adsense control panel. Your ID will look similar to PUB-1234567890, naturally with different numbers.
Now that you are all set up for Google Adsense, you need some basic information about being successful with Adsense. It comes down to a question of generating the right ads on your page and getting the traffic you need to click on the ads.
A word of Caution! Do not in any way entice or give incentives for clicking on the ads and don’t click on the ads yourself. This is strickly prohibited by Google and they will shut down your account.
My best suggestion here would be to take a course on profiting with Google Adsense.
There are many to choose from, and any good course will teach you how to figure out what the highest paying keywords are. Once you know which keywords you want to target, then start writing your blog posts in a way that gets those ads on your page. Keywords in your posts are the secrets to getting the most relevant ads on to your blog.
Google controls the ads that are displayed and you want them to be as high paying as possible in order to benefit the most from Google Adsense. Don’t write about the same thing everyday. Vary your article topics and stay within the market you’re trying to target. Since you will have other sources of revenue from your blog, you can take two approaches. Really work hard at providing content that will generate the highest possible paying ads or just write as you normally would. You will still get income from your Adsense Ads, but a lot less than you would if you work at using high paying keywords.
One drawback that I have to mention here, is that when someone clicks an ad on your blog, they are gone! What do I mean by that?
The adsense ads do not open up in a new browser window and your visitors may not know how to get back to your site. That’s why it’s a good idea to build an opt-in list from your blog visitors. Make sure that you get an autoresponder and that you have an opt-in form on your blog so you can remind them that you have a new article or something on your blog that may be of interest to them. Hopefully they like your content and they’ll come back if they’ve bookmarked your site.
In Part 5 we’ll be talking about “Selling Advertisements On Your Blog” – Stay tuned!
